Book Description

Time snakes between alternate universes.  Ever watchful, an alien intelligence survives on Mars, waiting to be found by spacefarers from Earth.  The alien’s ultimate goal is to send human astronauts back in time, where they will alter the past and thwart the extinction of the dinosaurs.  A race of intelligent dinosaurs, resembling the alien’s extinct species, subsequently evolves to rule the world.  But a human female astronaut, through a strange twist of fate, survives the change in the space-time continuum.  After finding herself in a dinosaurian body, she must race against time – and the formidable alien – to restore the universe to its rightful course.

Review

Being a fan of time-travel and light science fiction, I was instantly drawn into the exciting and imaginative worlds Deborah O’Neill Cordes created in DRAGON DAWN. From Moozrab (Mars) to a slice of modern Arizona to the Cretaceous period of Earth, the author enthralls the reader.

Interweaved in the unfolding story between pre-historic Earth and Moozrab are two impeccably drawn species: humans and dinosaurians. My favorite character was Dawann-dracon. I loved her fierce innocence and curiosity as she discovers surprising and mysterious things about herself and her world…thoughts and emotions that belong to someone else. Underlying the time-traveling mystery is an enticing and malevolent being called The Keeper, who moves the beings around these worlds and time periods like pawns on a chessboard.

DRAGON DAWN is a multifaceted and fascinating mix of science fiction, history, and fantasy. It was obvious that Ms. Cordes spent a great deal of time researching planet Earth and its various time periods, pre-historic dinosaurs, the solar system, Mars, even DNA! Her expert research, awe-inspiring details, and lush descriptions (whether real or fictional) brought the story to vivid life from manufactured life on Mars, to the dinosaurs and verdant Cretacean period and even on a dig site in present-day Arizona. I can’t wait to read what happens next with Dawann-dracon, Dawn, Gus and the crew of the Destiny. First-rate plotting, research, characterization, and writing will make DRAGON DAWN a story for your keeper shelf!

Back Cover Blurb:

A widow of eight years, Jordie is devoted to her daughter and knows how to protect her own heart... until Nathan Harper lends a hand when she's punched by a drunkard being forcefully removed from her NYC East Village bar.

Nathan is fascinated by the sassy bar owner, who doesn't recognize him from the Silver Screen and who appears more interested in conversation than sex.

But when shared words spark mutual passion, the menacing phone calls begin, and a stalker, who will stop at nothing to have Jordie, turns his crosshairs on Nathan.

Contains adult language.

My Review:

FINDING JORDIE starts off with a bang and never lets up. It’s so much more than just a romance. It’s gritty and real, romantic and suspenseful. Tough chick, bar-owner Jordie and her gal pal Rachel are an absolute blast (I would love to read a story about Rachel…hint, hint!). They’re outspoken, brash, and real with one another, just like best friends should be. While I’m not a huge fan of books with children, the relationship between Jordie and her smart, sassy daughter was so endearing and fun that I loved them together!

Then enter mysterious and hot Nathan when Jordie least expects it. Jordie’s life suddenly heats up in more ways than one. While they both have baggage (who doesn’t) there’s instant chemistry and you feel every nuance of it. As heat ratchets up between them, the suspense kicks in as a stalker targets first Jordie, then Nathan and they never know what’s coming. The ending will leave you breathless.

Ms. Harley has a fantastic voice and deftly spins a fun and romantic story with excellent characterization throughout. FINDING JORDIE is unexpectedly written in first person POV (which I LOVED) so you really get inside Jordie’s head. You’ll laugh, cry, and scream with Jordie until the last page. I can’t wait to read the sequel and see what’s up next for Jordie and Nathan. I highly recommend FINDING JORDIE.

Synchronicity

Synchronicity is a concept that was first described by psychologist Carl Jung in the 1920s. It is a meaningful coincidence, the experience of two or more events connected by meaning rather than cause. In Sign of the Throne, Cassandra Buchan discusses the concept with Abby and Riordan, in an effort to make sense of the strange things Abby has experienced.

As a professor of psychology and statistics, Cassandra values a logical, scientific approach to solving problems. One of the concepts she teaches about in her class is correlation does not imply causation. In other words, one thing may be related to another, but does not necessarily cause it. She uses Newcastle Beach as an example: the affluent neighborhood has higher housing prices and higher rates of students graduating high school than the rest of the city of Santa Linda. While these two things are related, they do not cause one another. Sometimes correlations show a pattern, but have nothing to do with each other—like intellect and shoe size, or an increase in car wrecks and the occurrence of sun spots.

Synchronicity, on the other hand, says that things are related, nothing is random, and everything happens for a reason. In a probability experiment, we say something is random if each trial is independent and has an equal chance of occurring. If you roll a die, and you want to figure out your chances of rolling a three, you could roll it a hundred times and then figure out the probability based on the number of trials, the number of sides to the die, and how many times you get a three. But, in conducting this experiment, the die must be balanced, and you must roll the die the same way each time for chance to be equal.

Real life does not work this way. It does not occur in a lab, or in a vacuum. Your chances of surviving a car wreck, for example, depend on a lot of things: the condition of the car, how fast you’re going, whether or not it’s a single or multiple car accident, the condition of the road, and the weather. In life, things don’t happen independently, and nothing happens the same way twice. Therefore, based on the above definition, nothing can be characterized as being random. That doesn’t prove everything is connected, but perhaps some things are synchronous, and share the same destiny. Jakob Bernoulli, a Swiss mathematician who lived in the 1600s, believed in fate, in the sense that once things are set into motion, they tend to eventually occur. So, taking our die example, he would say that if you want to roll a three, you will eventually roll a three if you keep rolling the die.

When Abby encounters the queen of a magical parallel realm, she discovers her destiny and the things that have been set into motion. She learns of the role she will play in rescuing the lost heir and restoring him to his place as the Solas Beir, ruler of Cai Terenmare.

My Review

First off, I loved the cover of SIGN OF THE THRONE and it immediately attracted me to the story. The cover depicted a paranormal or fantasy feel, and it fit the story well, as both the raven and the cat are integrated within the story. SIGN OF THE THRONE starts off with a bang, dropping the reader into two very different worlds, i.e. fantasy land Cai Terenmare and modern day California. I love fantasy novels with portals and this didn’t disappoint in that aspect. Most of the story takes place in our world in Newcastle Beach, California, however, we are introduced to the many fascinating events and myths of Cai Terenmare as ordinary, introverted 18-year-old Abby discovers who she is and helps heartthrob, bad boy David come to terms with his identity and his rightful place in Cai Terenmare.

The beginning and end of the novel were adventurous and enthralling. The author definitely has a good grasp of worldbuilding and infused SIGN OF THE THRONE with fantastic mythology and legends. However, the middle of the book was bogged down a little with too much backstory lumped together and not as much action as I would have liked to see. Having said that, I loved the backstory, but I wanted to see some of it sprinkled better throughout the story, and there were areas I wanted the author to show the reader rather than tell us what was happening. As I said, the ending was great though, and it leaves the reader with a warm feeling of anticipation of what’s to come in the next book in the series.

Ms. Ousley has created a terrific new world full of magic, mythology, and monsters with a healthy dose of romance. While complex, her characters (both human and not!) are relatable and her worlds are unique. SIGN OF THE THRONE should appeal to both young adult and adults who love fantasy or urban fantasy.

(I received an ARC from the author as part of her blog tour in exchange for a fair and honest review).

Back Cover Blurb:

One-on-one instruction never felt so right—or so wrong.

There's nothing unusual about Mia Page's attraction to the young science teacher at the middle school. After all, she's not the only one who finds him enticing. But when he pulls her son aside to ask for her phone number, she knows she's in serious trouble. Since her divorce four years earlier, she's been out of circulation, choosing to focus on parenting instead, and she's not entirely sure she can handle an entanglement with the sexy Mr. Walden.

There are also other reasons why getting involved with Curt would be a bad idea. He's two years shy of thirty, and she's on the downside of that unmentionable number. He's adamant about never having kids, and she has a son. Even the guy's romantic gifts are suspect. Energy saving light bulbs? He has to be kidding.

On the other hand, he's fun, sweet, and smart. He stimulates her intellectually, emotionally, and Lord help her, physically, opening her eyes to life outside her comfortable world. Yet their differences quietly gnaw at Mia even while she succumbs to their undeniable chemistry.

As their romance deepens, so do Mia's fears that Curt will eventually hurt her. On edge, all it takes is an innocent comment to provoke her into drawing first blood. Mia recklessly wounds Curt, learning only too late that this blade cuts both ways. Frantic to make amends, she fears it might be too late to admit the feelings she's tried so hard to suppress.

Excerpt:

Casey was almost to the Explorer, but Mia barely noticed. Her entire focus was centered on the sexy teacher instead.
She could feel the beads of perspiration popping out all over her at the way his lightweight shirt caught the breeze, billowing out of the back of his sexy-assed pants. Was that linen? It couldn’t be. It draped like rayon but without the wrinkles. Whatever it was, he wasn’t exactly dressed to roam school hallways or stand with his back to a class while he wrote on a chalkboard. She envied and pitied the poor adolescent girls who had to look at that supremely scrumptious derriere every day then suffer each night in a private torture all their own.
No, this guy belonged on a beach, seated at an umbrella shaded table with his long masculine fingers curled around a glass of wine.
Okay, putting Curt on a beach was probably a mistake. In a flash she had him bounding out of the surf in low slung swim trunks as water ran down his sun-kissed body. She moaned softly at the damp line of glittering hair bisecting his chest. It tapered away across his solid abs then picked up again at his navel as a solid arrow plunging inside his waistband. Mia’s fingers twitched as she did a virtual walkthrough, quite willing to follow that trail wherever it led. Exploration was highly underrated these days.
“Mom! Are you coming?”
Casey’s call jolted her back to reality. Well, one thing she could say for certain, this fantasy was galaxies better than the usual gloom and doom.
Hurrying to the SUV, Mia climbed in and drew her seatbelt across her lap. “Did I hear Mr. Walden say he teaches science?” Silence followed her question. Looking up, she caught Casey giving her a strange look. “What?”
“Don’t even think about asking me to pass him a note at school,” he said flatly.
Mia broke into a startled laugh. “Are you kidding?”
The boy shook his head slowly. “I know that look, Mom. I’ve seen it a hundred times this year, and I’m not doing it. Don’t even ask."

My Review:

Grading on Curves is my third Tara Mills novel. Need I say more? I keep Tara Mills on my TBR list because her fun, flirtatious, and sexy romances are so good. They make perfect beach reads, or a fun quick read on the weekends, with plenty of substance, excellent & believable characterization, and great storytelling. Whenever I want to veer away from the dark, gritty paranormal novels I read, I know a Tara Mills romance will brighten my mood and satisfy my romance bug.
Divorced mom Mia is settled in her life and job and isn’t looking for a man despite her best friend’s nagging her to move on and start dating again. The minute Mia lays eyes on Curt, her son’s science teacher, unexpected sparks fly between them. Some people say you’ll never meet the man of your dreams when you’re looking for him. You have to wait for him to pop into your life out of the blue. Bam. Mia and Curt popped out of the blue and into each other’s lives. But there’s resistance on Mia’s part for various reasons I won’t spoil. Curt, not so much. He knows what he wants…and he wants Mia.
Chemistry explodes between Mia and the younger Curt, and you root for them to find their happily ever after. What woman wouldn't want the romantic attentions from a hot younger man? Ms. Mills handles the age difference deftly. The road is a little bumpy and you wonder if they will ever reach their destination, but that's what makes this story and the characters so real. Kudos to Ms. Mills for another delightfully enjoyable and passionate winner.
